Manchu Bhaktavatsalam Naidu, after facing many hurdles in pursuing a career in films, was working as an assistant director, in Chennai. It was around this time that director Dasari Narayana Rao gave him a chance to act in the film Swargam Narakam changing his name to Mohan Babu. That was in 1975. Thirty five years later Mohan Babu is a household name in Andhra Pradesh.
Mohan Babu is probably one of the few actors in the industry today, who has done all kinds of roles be it as the side kick, or a comedian, or a villain or an anti-hero or a hero. He has touched almost all genres that Telugu films have seen so far, and has more than 500 films to his name! While his straight forward attitude put him into some kind of controversies, his kind heartedness made him a socially conscious person. He established schools and colleges with special facilities for poor children.
He was also involved in politics, inspired by former Chief Minister, Late N.T.Ramarao, and was also nominated to Rajyasabha as an MP. The government of India has bestowed him with the Padma Shri Award for his contribution to the society as an actor and socially conscious citizen.
